Malnutrition
Protein deficiency is a cause of serious ill health and death in developing countries. Protein deficiency plays a role in the disease kwashiorkor. War, famine, overpopulation and other factors can increase the level of malnutrition and protein deficiency. Protein deficiency can cause impairment of intelligence or mental retardation, due to the lack of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. In countries suffering from widespread protein deficiency, food is generally full of plant fibers, this makes adequate energy and protein consumption very difficult. Symtoms of kwashiorkor include apathy, diarrhea, inactivity, failure to thrive, skin flakes, fatty liver and edema of the abdomen and legs. Edema is the swelling as a result of the collection of fluid within the tissues. Malnutrition is often the cause of death and disease in third world countries. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) affects 500 million people and kills 10 million people per year.
